Perspective

I love my wife for many reasons. But one of the largest is the outsider's perspective she brings to so much of my life.

It's a pretty constant thing, and one of the unexpected benefits of marriage, having someone else there to comment on things I've learned to just take for granted. One of the most interesting is how she evaluates my relationship with my home town. Her enthusiasm or lack thereof for places and institutions is amazingly interesting to me. Like, Wrigley Field is actually a cooler place to me now because she, having not really known it existed until she dated me and having a natural skepticism for anything I really, really like, thinks it's actually as special as I do. It's as if I have an instant "delusion check."

Anyway, she was getting ready for work while I was downloading a version of the CSO performing "Bear Down, Chicago Bears." when she stopped and said, "Man, I kinda wish we were in Chicago right now. It'd be so much fun. Cuz, at its heart, it's still a small midwestern town. So it's gotta be like a really big version of Grants (NM) when their team goes to state."

And she's right. Chiago's team is going to state. That's really what this feels like. It's totally different than when Da Bulls went to the Finals. And it's completely different than when the Cubs were in the playoffs. This, this feels like I'm in high school and my team is going to the State Finals.

Anyway, that's my thought for today. Oh, and the lyrics to "Bear Down, Chicago Bears." as a service to all my non-Chicagoan or ex-pat friends who are now riding Bears BandWagonAir.

Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down.
